“Possible Solution for Depression of Japanese Salary-men and Students ”

1. Problem

General Japanese

It is said that Japanese people have a national character to have depression easily. Many Japanese people cannot say “no” when they are asked to address some tasks which they do not want to address. They save stress in their mind and it become a trigger of depression. Moreover, Japan underwent terrible economic depression and the number of patients was increased immensely on this era. According to the data of Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry of Japan, the total number of the ambulant patients, old case patients and first medical examination patients of depression in Japan on 1999 was 77 thousands, on 2002 was 129 thousands and on 2005 was 154 thousands. This essay is focuses on the students and salary-men because students should keep their mental health well and salary-men are very important people because they are the lead of Japan and they are the model of students.

Salary-men

The number of patients over ten years old is increasing and salary-men are unexceptional. Imaginary salary-men are always looked tired and the image is applied to salary-men on high economic growth. However, the tiredness of mental of modern salary-men may be worse than salary-men of old days. According to the survey of police, the number of suicides of thirty, forty and fifty years old was increased drastically at 1998 and the increased number was 4,482. The number of suicides has never decreased after 1998. The Japanese problem of depression grow into a serious problem. It is the big problem for Japan that salary-men have depression because they are the core of the families and Japanese society.

Students

The number of depressed students is increasing, too. The increasing amount of this generation is not large but there are a lot of students who have gloomy mood abound in this country. Only having gloomy mood is not serious problem but these people must be reserves of patients of depression. If they do not care their mental health, they should have depression when they enter the business world.

2. Cause

Salary-men

Salary-men’s depression strongly connects with social radical change.

Firstly, the big radical social change which hit salary-men was Heisei recession. Heisei recession happened after the high economic growth on Japan. Heisei recession started from 1991-1992 and it caused by the bursting of the babble economy (Wikipedia). Economical depression on Heisei recession tortured salary-men strongly, and at 1998, salary-men’s patience exploded: the number of commit suicide of salary-men increased drastically at 1998 (National Police Agency). The factor which indicates the strong connection with this explosion is radical increasing of jobless rate at 1998 ( National police Agency). According to The Economist journal, commit suicide have strong relation with mental depression, and this correlation means increasing depression at 1998.

Secondly, the pay-per-performance system beat up salary-men. Japanese companies had taken the age-indexed system and the lifetime job-security after World War 2 and salary-men had accustomed the custom very well. Consequently, salary-men cannot adjust to the new system and struggling. The old Japanese custom ensured salary-men’s life if he missed at some works, but new system does not support his life and at worst companies fire them if they make mistakes or if they cannot make an achievement. Salary-men do not want to challenge to achieve big projects on new system because the risk to get fired increases when they consult on big projects. Moreover, there are some Japanese characters to disturb new system: representative example are beating people who indicate better ability or achievement and not blaming coworker if he or she makes a mistake. Salary-men do not know how to associate with their coworker on the new system because of these characters. As above stated, pay-per-performance system does not work well on Japanese society and this system make salary-men fearful for unclear their life, apathy for their work and scared to communicate with their coworker. These are big factors of depression.

Student

The factor of that many students have gloomy mood is that they do not dream dreams about their future.

Firstly, a lot of students fear to get into the business world. This problem is caused by two reasons: having fear for pay-per-performance system and having fear for becoming beaten adults. Japanese companies imported pay-per-performance system when Japan faced economical depression, and the system have never worked well because the system was not optimized to Japanese people. To compete with coworkers is inexperienced act for Japanese people because usual Japanese people have been grown up as people who can harmonize with the people in same group.

Secondly, losing general dream of Japanese people is the causation of gloomy mood of students, too. Every Japanese people on high economic growth had one dream: to get good life like American’s. In order to make the dream come true, Japanese people worked on single-mindedness. The dream came true and most Japanese people got buying power to buy most of things which they want to buy. Some modern students drop off the necessity of working because they live on the society which they can live even if they do not work by parents support. If there is a general Japanese dream, the students who do not have their own dream can work for the dream.

Finally, the range of dream became small. Japanese people of old days could not eat foods enough and they had a dream to eat a lot but modern students have never had that dream. Moreover, many modern students do not want to buy sports car because they used to not stick-shift car but automatic transmission car and they have watched TV commercial of lauding fuel-efficient car. The last word is that the things which they want to buy are purchased easily. Because of these reasons, It is too hard to have dream concern about purchase.

3. Possible Solution

Salary-men

There are two possible solutions for preventing salary-men’s depression: getting skills for work effectively, and making the pay-per-performance system beneficial not for only companies but for companies and salary-men.

Firstly, Salary-men should have self confidence for their own job. In order to realize this, salary-men should get working skills effectively. Japanese people traditionally pay attention for their title, and they lose everything after they lose their title. They know this tragedy and they are afraid of lose it but they never make an effort to improve their skills. If they have firm skills, they may not fear about kick-out and they can work with no depression. Also, it is good way to keep their self confidence that to get some effective licenses. For instance, if the salary-man gets a license to handle real-estate and building, the safety to work at real-estate company is become higher.

Secondly, the possible solution for salary-men’s depression is make pay-per-performance system change for good system for workers and companies. This system is not generally used for not employee but companies’ profit on Japan. Companies should assure that never send down the price of salary if salary-men make mistakes to remove their anxiety. Salary-men work more effective after their working place become well, and it is good for companies and salary-men. To begin with to make a mood to determine the working time by themselves and it helps their health of mind well. Pay-per-performance system does not give a free to go home on the time when they want or take a vacation with pay. The real pay per-performance system never should bond salary-men to desk after office hours.

And if salary-men get depression, he should go to hospital as quick as possible. It is not good for depressed salary-men and company to continue to work because depressed salary-men cannot work effectively (Gordon). Moreover, the cost to care the disease is higher as symptom progress (Gordon). Company should make the depressed salary-men whose symptom is not serious go to hospital for the company’s own profit and the patient salary-men.

Students

The possible solution for students is to have dream. Actually, it is too hard to have a dream for people who do not have a dream. These people should be active to find a dream. The effective actions to have a dream are trip as a backpacker and meeting with active adults. The best way is trip as a backpacker because students cannot get big impression on their daily life. The reason of this is that students tend to pass long time at same places like their house and campus. Students can spread their vision by seeing not usual scenery or transaction with foreign people if students visit unknown lands. The experience gotten on the trip may be a good clue to have a dream. If the students do not have a brave to go abroad, meeting with vigorous people is effective measure, too. The students can get positive vision for their own future and it reduces the fright to become beaten adult. Moreover, students may have a good strain to galvanize themselves through the meeting. Students may have a dream by getting good stimuli.
